At Gaven State School student’s from Prep to Year 6 participate in a four term, thirty minutes per week program for Physical Education. This program promotes learning in the areas of throwing, catching, bouncing, kicking, striking, social, loco motor and basic body movement skills. Students are also provided with opportunities to improve their cardiovascular fitness.
Students have many opportunities to participate in sport at Gaven State School. The school has Athletic and Cross Country Carnivals for Students in years Prep to 6 as well as a Swimming Carnival for years 4-6.
Gaven State School competes in the Gold Coast North District Interschool Sport competition. Students from 10-12 years of age are eligible to participate. Soccer, rugby league and Australian Rules Football are available for boys while girls have netball and touch football.
Gaven State School also participates in the Gold Coast Suns Cup. This is a one day Australian Rules Football tournament which involves the best boys and girls teams on the Gold Coast competing against each other in a knock out style tournament.
Australian Rules Football Excellence Program
In Semester Two 2014, Gaven State School will begin an Australian Rules Football excellence program for Year 5 and 6 boys and girls. This program will be the first of its kind in Queensland. In 2015 the program will progress to the boys in Years 5 and 6. Gaven State School will compete in a Sports Excellence competition which will be comprised of schools from the Gold Coast, Logan and Brisbane areas. The program will be supported by AFL Queensland and Helensvale State High School. Helensvale State High School will provide coaching support via their Senior Excellence Football boys and this interaction will strengthen Gaven’s ties as a feeder school to Helensvale’s football program.
